Metegol (Underdogs)
Metegol (Underdogs / Futbolín)
I worked as Layout Artist on Metegol, the fully CG animated feature directed by Juan José Campanella, released internationally as Underdogs, Futbolín and The Unbeatables. The film tells the story of a team of table-football players who come to life, and won the Goya Award for Best Animated Film. This was my first job in layout, and the project where I learned the craft.
My responsibilities on the film included:
Rough layout: translating the storyboards and animatic into 3D in Maya, setting up cameras, lenses, staging and shot composition.
Character and set blocking: placing characters, props and sets and setting the timing of each shot, giving animation a clear starting point.
Camera work: building camera moves for both intimate character scenes and fast football action, including the contrast in scale between the human world and the tiny table-football players.
Final layout: refining cameras after animation and keeping continuity consistent from shot to shot.
Delivery: publishing cameras, layouts and scene data for the animation, lighting and compositing teams.
Thanks to the whole team for an unforgettable project. It was a privilege to start my layout career on a landmark of Latin American animation.
