F9: The Fast Saga | DNEG

I worked as Senior Layout TD at DNEG (Montreal) on Universal Pictures' F9: The Fast Saga, focusing on the race sequences. Only five real cars were shot for these sequences, so the rest of the field was CG, and layout was responsible for making the whole race hold together. The clips below are some of the shots I worked on.

My responsibilities on the film included:

Race coordination: laying out the positions, spacing and paths of the CG cars around the practical ones, so the race reads clearly and the order of the field makes sense in every shot.
Continuity: tracking each car's position across the sequence, keeping the race consistent from shot to shot and across cuts.
Shot layout: assembling shots in Maya from tracked cameras, track environments and vehicles, matching scale and speed to the photographed plates.
Camera work: creating and refining CG cameras for full-CG shots, matching the style and lensing of the live-action footage.
Shared sequences: working on sequences shared with other teams, keeping layouts and car placement aligned so the work cut together seamlessly.
Delivery: publishing cameras, layouts and vehicle placement for the animation, FX, lighting and compositing teams.

Thanks to the whole team at DNEG for a great project.
