1917 | MPC Film

I worked as Senior Layout TD at MPC Film on Sam Mendes' 1917, and had the luck to be on the project from start to finish. The film is designed to play as one continuous shot, which made it one of the most technical layout challenges I've worked on: every transition had to match and blend right in front of the viewer's eyes. The film went on to win the Academy Award and the BAFTA for Best Visual Effects.

My responsibilities on the film included:

Shot stitching and camera blends: lining up and blending the cameras of consecutive takes, so separate plates join into one seamless, continuous move.
Shot layout: assembling shots in Maya against the tracked cameras, matching environments and set geometry to the plates on both sides of each transition.
Set dressing and extensions: dressing the CG environments (trenches, no man's land and ruined landscapes) and keeping them continuous across the long takes.
Checking and delivery: verifying line-ups and blends against the plates in Nuke, and publishing cameras and layouts through Katana for the lighting and compositing teams.

Thanks to the whole team at MPC Film. I learned a huge amount on this project, and I'm proud to have been part of it.
